St. Sebastian’s Church

Ellis Nagar Parish is situated in the southern part of Madurai city. The parish church is adjacent to BSNL Tower, Ellisnagar. This parish is a new born unit carved out of the parish of Railway Colony. Fr. N.A. Manuel was the first parish priest from 17 July 1988. It is he who built the parish church. At the time of bifurcation the cemetery the cemetery which was under the care of Railway colony parish was given in the care of the parish priest of Ellis Nagar. Fr. V.M. Irudayam built a small chapel for St.Antony of Paduva near the cemetery in the year 1986. The parish has an area of 3 sqkm. There are about 1000 Catholic families and their main occupation is business while some work in the BSNL and the Railways. Many people depend upon daily wages.
Death and burial association was shifted from railway to Ellis Nagar parish in the year 1992 by Fr. Joe Xavier. The following year he has builted the beltover.Fr Irudaya Raj has been good pastor in the year 2003. Fr Britto Amalanathan renewed the church and presbytery. Blessed Peter school was opened during his time. Near to the school Peter Bonilli community hall. The ground floor was built by Rev Fr Benedict Ambrose Raj. He brought a land is thirunathapuram. Fr JeyaRaj built the church of Our Lady of Arockia Annai. He also built the first floor of Blessed Peter Bonilli school and renovated the church and presbytery. He formed the basic Christian communities and created Parish council.
From 2009 Fr Francis Borgio was the parish priest. At cemetery the walls were raised. In Singarapuram the old St Sebastain church was converted into new study center. In Remembrance of silver jubilee of the church the compound wall as well as the church was renovated. The land in Ponmeni was sold and a land was bought in Madakulam for future use.
This parish enjoys the services of the religious sisters of Trichy St. Anne, Holy Family of Spoleto, Salesians and Society of Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate. Moreover, this parish is being nourished by the activities of Legion of Mary, Vincent de Paul, Youth Association, YCS/YSM and Altar boys association.
