Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church
Ayyampalyam (Quasi parish), Dindigul Dt. – 624204.
The present presbytery at Ayyampalayam was built by the Jesuits to be used as a godown to keep their coffee seeds which they brought from Manalar Estate. On the request of the first Archbishop Peter Leonard it was given to the diocese to be used as a presbytery
Ayyampalayam is a small quasi parish with 40 Catholic families, scattered in substations. Most of them are daily labourers. The church and presbytery are on the northern side of Maratha Nathi Dam. Ganesapuram and Pattiveeranpatti are the substations of this parish. The population of Ayyampalayam is about 45,000, of which the Catholic population is about 200. The main occupation of people is agriculture and they work in coconut groves and betel farms. The parochial church was built on 8 December1989. The presbytery was built 70 years ago.
The mass was celebrated in the varanda of the presbytery. Later the church was built and blessed by Arch Bishop Arokiasamy on 18-08-1989 when Fr. Divyanandham was the procurator. The presbytery was renovated in 1992. Fr. Gnanasandhanam rectified many irregular marriages and took lot of interest to catechise the people. He was the parish priest at Ayyampalayam for 24 years.
Church property
There were two coconut groves, one in Ayyampalayam and another in Poongulam. Since Mr. Xavier had misused the lease agreement, the diocese filed a case for the 8 achres of Poongulam thoppu in 1992 onwards. When Fr. Arul was the procurator, after the long struggle the case was own in the year 2000. Now it has been sold and the amount was invested in the income generating building for diocese.
Moreover, this parish is being nourished by the activities of the, the Sisters of St. Anne’s of Madhavaram, Anbiams and the Eucharistic Crusade.
